Who's the
dude? By now you might be asking "who and why is this bearded guy on
the label"? Bisschopswijn is often served around the arrival time of
Sinterklaas in The Netherlands. Adults enjoy a hot cup of Bisschopswijn and
children enjoy hot cocoa. You may have figured out that Bisschopswijn is the
Dutch word for Bishop's Wine. Sinterklaas or Sint Nikolaas, the Dutch name for
Saint Nicholas, was a bishop from present-day Turkey who was a patron saint to
children. Each year Sinterklaas comes to Holland to deliver goodies and toys to
the children (as does the modern day St. Nick in United States). Along with the
tradition comes seasonal food and beverages to celebrate his arrival.
Bisschopswijn is one of those traditions. |

Look,
yonder comes the schooner, All the way from Spain. There stand good St.
Nicholas, Coming back again.
Frisking up and down the deck, See
his horsie go! How prettily the pennants Flutter to and fro! His
servant smiles upon us- With gifts his bags are rich- Who's good, shall
have some goodies, Who's naughty, gets a switch
